The Russellville Area Chamber of Commerce will host all four mayoral candidates on Friday for its First Friday Breakfast. It will also be the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak for the chamber to serve a hot meal.

“This is an event we do the first Friday of every month for Chamber members,” interim Chamber CEO Megan Selman said. “We try and have a quality host and talk about community development and economic development. It’s also the first time since Covid that we will serve a hot-plated breakfast.

“During Covid, we had to discontinue First Friday Breakfast. When it was safe for us to gather again, we still didn’t serve food out of an abundance of caution. This Friday will be catered by Stoby’s.”

Candidates Randy Horton, Mark Tripp, Fred Teague and Eric Westcott will answer questions presented by Andy McNeill, the volunteer chair of government relations committee at the Russellville Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We want a quality discussion on economic development and community development,” Selman said. “This is a forum and not a debate, and it is not open to questions from the audience. Andy curates the topics, and they are related to economic and community growth, the things the chamber focuses on. We try and stay away from social issues unless they relate to those areas.”

All candidates were given potential question topics, but they were not provided the questions in advance. Selman said the candidates are required to answer in the moment.

“They have to think on their feet,” she said. “We don’t want it to be scripted. We might tell them we will talk about leadership, but they won’t the questions. Andy does a good job of asking thoughtful and insightful questions.”

The forum is open to chamber members only. It is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Friday at The Center for the Arts in Russellville.

“I think we will hear diverse opinions, and they really come from different sectors of the community, different life experiences,” Selman said. “Some have background in politics, some have background in community service, some have background in being the mayor previously. Andy is excellent at curating questions that are thoughtful.”

The Courier plans to cover this event to provide information given by the candidates to the community at large.
